Sarge is one of Leisha’s, AMC Wyoming’s Practice Manager, treasured fur babies. In spring of 2014, he was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his knee. He underwent corrective surgery at AMC in June and started a rehabilitation program at a referral hospital as part of his recovery. Laser therapy was one treatments he was prescribed.
As a client, I had the option to accompany Sarge during his many treatments. This allowed me to become more familiar with the technology and the various settings used for optimal healing. Some days, we focused more on his spine, lumbar and hips, while other days we targeted his stifle directly. Overall, Sarge enjoyed the laser. He adapts quickly to the routine, so by the third session, he understood the process, and it seemed to relax him—almost like having a massage!
Patients do not typically get full relief from their symptoms after the first treatment. Instead, it takes a series of treatments, depending on the severity of the condition. I think that therapeutic laser is an obvious choice for anyone who has personally benefitted from this form of treatment, say at their own chiropractic office, since ours is the same class IV laser used in human medicine. Sarge was also enrolled in hydrotherapy to maximize the range of motion on his leg and help strengthen his muscles, post-op. I did notice marked improvement on the day immediately following laser therapy sessions. Sarge was able to perform better—and be pushed further—on the underwater treadmill, as a result of laser therapy.
